The map, known in-world as The Cursed Apple, is Deadlock’s main battleground. It is comprised of two mirrored sides controlled by their respective patrons; The Amber Hand and The Sapphire Flame. In order to win, one team must destroy the other team’s patron. The Cursed Apple is visualised as a minimap in the bottom right-hand side of the screen.
Lanes
Deadlock’s map consists of four lanes; York Street, Greenwich, Broadway and Park Avenue. Each lane is guarded by multiple Lane NPCs, which defend the patron along with the team’s territory. Each of the four lanes is colour coded:
- Yellow: York st.
- Green: Greenwich
- Blue: Broadway
- Purple: Park ave.
Heroes are randomly assigned into lanes, influenced by a hidden MMR value. There will always be two duo lanes and two solo lanes per team, indicated by the colour of a player’s portrait in the HUD, which turns to grey post-laning phase (10 minutes). Players can switch lanes as they wish from the beginning of the game.
The lane’s location is dependent on which side of the map you begin on. Due to this, the green and blue lanes along with the yellow and purple lanes will sometimes be flipped to mirror the opposing team’s lanes. Enemy lanes and lane bosses appear as red on the map.
Lane Defense
Each lane is protected by lane bosses and troopers; guardians are located furthest forward in lane, followed by walkers and then inner lane guardians. Defeating lane bosses leaves the enemy lane more vulnerable to attack (either from heroes or ally troopers), as well as extending your zipline to allow allies to reach the enemy territory quicker.
Completing the following objectives will unlock flex slots for your team; item slots which become vital to surviving against enemy heroes late-game:
- Destroy all enemy Guardians
- Destroy one enemy Walkers
- Destroy two enemy Walkers
- Destroy an enemy Shrine
Lane bosses also provide you with more souls upon death than a wave of troopers - these souls are important to claim when you destroy a lane boss, in case an enemy hero denies you the souls that are released.
Shops
Shops are where you can buy and upgrade items to build your character and make them stronger. Shops can be used by any player, and are not locked depending on which side of the map they are on.
Each lane begins with a shop located next to each guardian - this means that in lane there are 8 shops total; 4 for each team, 2 per lane. A shop will close once the defending guardian is defeated.
3 usable shops remain open throughout the entirety of the match; one located in your spawn area, along with two “secret” shops located underground.
Map Traversal
Ziplines
Every lane can be traversed quickly via a Zipline. While on the Zipline, your move speed is 18 m/s. The zipline has an activatable speed boost, which provides the player with a zipline speed of 40 m/s for 32 seconds. This speedboost has a cooldown of 280s seconds (which begins instantly upon activating the zipline speedboost). Ziplines start on cooldown at match start. The length of a zipline is dependent on the current status of the team’s lanes; being projected further into the lane when a lane defense, such as a guardian, is destroyed; or when there are no enemy troopers blocking the path.
After three seconds of travelling on a zipline, you become immune to being stunned and knocked down from the zipline - this is indicated through a visual blue spiral effect which surrounds the hero.
After taking damage from an enemy hero, the zipline cannot be used for three seconds. Enemy heroes can also knock you down from the Zipline, dealing 15% of your HP in damage and stunning you for three seconds.
Teleporters
After 10 minutes, teleporters become available to use. Teleporters are another way of traversing the Cursed Apple and there are currently four sets of teleporters in the game, able to send the player across the map within a matter of seconds. Some teleporters are located within buildings, while others are located underground. It takes 5 seconds to be sent to the matching teleporter.
The teleporter channel will not be cancelled upon taking damage, meaning your teleport cannot be interrupted when standing in a teleporter box.
Rooftops and Tunnels
The Cursed Apple is also traversible via rooftops which can be accessed via ropes, and tunnels which are accessed through stairwells. Some rooftops indicate the out-of-bounds zone; these areas have no detailing and will begin damaging the hero after a few seconds when stood upon.
Wind Fans
Wind fans are objects located on the rooftops of some buildings. When a hero walks over a bouncepad, they are launched in a particular direction, which is indicated by a large white arrow pointing in the direction of trajectory, along with a wind effect.
Ropes
Added in the 08-29-2024 update, ropes are a vertical form of traversal scattered on the sides of buildings around The Cursed Apple. You can press and hold spacebar to attach to a rope, and use your movement keys to move up and down the rope. You can also aim / shoot while hanging from them.
Shiv is able to use his alt-fire to quickly climb ropes, no other hero is able to do this.
The Jungle
The area between lanes is colloquially known as the Jungle - this area is important for travelling between lanes, claiming camps and collecting souls and upgrades for your hero to provide you an advantage in fights. Midboss and the Soul Urn are also located in the jungle area, and both are able to grant your team great advantages against the enemy through souls or other buffs.
